AI Prompts for Discovery Call Analysis

After a discovery call, two things need to happen fast: the evidence needs to be extracted while it is fresh, and the gaps need to be named honestly. A transcript or good notes make this possible; the temptation is to remember the call as better than it was. Analysis that separates what the prospect said from what the rep inferred is what makes qualification and forecasting trustworthy.

These prompts extract the evidence against your qualification fields, audit what was not learned, and produce the next step and the internal update. They need the transcript or notes; the model must quote, not summarize, when it comes to evidence.

The prompts

1. Extract qualification evidence from the transcript

Best forFilling the qualification fields with quotes, not impressions.
Inputs needed
  • Transcript or notes
  • Framework fields
How to use itPaste the transcript. Require a quote or a close paraphrase for every field marked as evidenced; anything else is inferred.
Expected outputField-by-field extraction with quotes, evidence status (stated / implied / not covered), the hypotheses confirmed or rejected, and the prospect's own words for the problem and impact.
Act as a sales analyst extracting qualification evidence from a discovery call.

Transcript or notes: [paste]
Framework fields: [e.g. metrics/impact, economic buyer, decision criteria, decision process, identified pain, champion, competition, timing, budget]
Pre-call hypotheses: [list]

1. For each field: what the prospect actually said (quote or close paraphrase with the speaker), evidence status — stated / implied / not covered — and our reading. Do not upgrade implied to stated.
2. Hypotheses: confirmed, rejected or untested, with the quote that decides it.
3. The problem in their words: the two or three sentences that best capture what they said matters, verbatim.
4. Impact: any numbers, timeframes or consequences they gave; note where impact was discussed only qualitatively.
5. Stakeholders mentioned by name or role, and what was said about their involvement.
6. Buying signals and warning signals in what they said (urgency, alternatives, hesitation, deflection), each quoted.
7. Contradictions between attendees or between what they said and what we believed.

Present as a table plus the verbatim problem statement. Do not fill a field from inference and present it as evidence.

2. Identify what was not learned and the risk it hides

Best forAn honest gap list before the deal is staged or forecast.
Inputs needed
  • Extraction results
  • Deal stage requirements
How to use itRun after extraction. The model names the gaps, rates the risk each creates for the deal, and proposes how and from whom to close each.
Expected outputGap list with deal risk rating, the assumption currently filling each gap, the person who can answer it, and the stage the deal can honestly be at.
You are auditing a discovery call for what was not learned.

Extraction: [field-by-field results with evidence status]
Stage exit criteria: [what must be known to advance to the next stage]
Rep's proposed stage and close date: [from CRM]

1. List every field that is implied or not covered. For each: the assumption the rep is currently making, the risk if the assumption is wrong (deal-level: slips, loses, disqualifies), and the priority.
2. The most dangerous gap — the one that, if it goes the wrong way, ends the deal — and why.
3. For each gap: who can answer it (which stakeholder), the question to ask, and the natural moment (next call, email, through the champion).
4. Signals suggesting the call was better in memory than in the transcript: places where the prospect was polite rather than committed.
5. The stage the deal can honestly be at given the evidence, versus the proposed stage; and whether the close date has any basis in what they said about timing and process.
6. Recommendation: advance, hold, or disqualify — with the reason in one sentence.

Be direct. 'They seemed interested' is not evidence.

3. Turn the call into the next step and internal update

Best forA next step the prospect will agree to and a CRM update a manager can trust.
Inputs needed
  • Extraction and gaps
  • Their stated timeline
  • Available next-step options
How to use itThe model proposes the next step based on what was said, drafts the line to propose it, and writes the internal update in the framework's language.
Expected outputProposed next step with rationale and wording, internal CRM update, risk flags, and the questions for the next conversation.
Act as an account executive converting a discovery call into action.

Extraction and gap list: [summary]
Their timeline and process as stated: [summary]
Next-step options available: [technical deep-dive, stakeholder meeting, tailored demo, pilot scoping, proposal, reference call]

1. Proposed next step: the one that closes the most important gap and matches their stated process — with the reasoning and the exact wording to propose it (tied to something they said).
2. Fallback next step if they decline the first.
3. Internal CRM update (under 150 words): problem in their words, impact, stakeholders, process, timing, competition, risks — using the framework fields; mark inferred items as such.
4. Risk flags for the manager: the two things most likely to stall or kill this deal based on the call.
5. Questions for the next conversation, mapped to the gap list, and who should ask them.
6. Stage and close date recommendation, with the evidence.

Keep the internal update factual. The next step must be something the prospect has a reason to want, not just what we need.
